Our urban Drop-In Centers located in Chiang Mai and the busy border city of Mae Sai focus on emergency assistance for street youth and sexual health education. Condoms and pregnancy control are made available free of charge and STD/HIV/AIDS and pregnancy tests can also be arranged.
The Mae Sai Drop-In Center provides vocational training for mothers so they will be better equipped to resist the temptation of selling their children. With their newly taught skills, they can provide for their kids with a legitimately earned income. Mae Sai staff also make regular trips to check on the well-being of the children trapped in the border between Burma and Thailand.
In Chiang Mai, outreach events are held regularly and VCDF staff visit brothels and bars that host youth working in the sex Industry. Youth are also trained to host these awareness events Independently of VCDF staff. Our Thai and native tribal staff and volunteers have an outstanding rapport with the local street youth. This established trust allows the staff to help the children and youth with any problems they may be going through, However personal.
Budgeting, cooking, cleaning, work ethics, relationship management and other life-skills are also taught at the Drop-In Centers through one-on-one counseling, life-mapping, games and activities.
When thinking of child sex trafficking, It isn’t unusual to think of female children, However, we have found there are many boys caught up in this lifestyle as well. Even though we do help children regardless of gender, the Chiang Mai Drop-In Center remains to be the only group in northern Thailand to specifically design outreach programs for males. Many of our events are held in areas where it is common for male tourists and Thai men to find underage boy prostitutes.
