Today, VCDF’s main service is the care and education of over 120 street children located at our two children’s homes- one outside of Chiang Mai and the other located on the Burmese border in Chiang Saen. These children have been moved into our Children’s Home after, if possible, permission was given by their mothers, Once in our care, the children are provided with not only food and housing, but also medical attention and professional counseling to help them overcome their history of sexual abuse. We host additional therapeutic programs like art therapy, music therapy and trips to nature reserves.
VCDF Children are also taught to read and write by VCDF staff and issued Student ID Cards which allow them to go to school and legally live in Thailand. As the children attend school, VCDF also provides vocational training like organic farming, craft-making, cooking, wood-working and portrait sketching. After they finish school, they can implement the skills they have learned and have a legitimate source of income.
It should also be noted that VCDF has never removed a child from its community, simply because the child is impoverished. All of the children currently living at our Children’s Homes have been or were at risk of being sexually exploited. We believe, even though circumstances may be difficult, the child is better off being with his/her family rather than with strangers. However, once that family puts their child in danger and violates the child’s basic human rights, then we believe the family is obviously on longer competent or deserves to raise that child. And, unfortunately, in Thailand, there is little to government intervention on an alien child’s behalf.
You can sponsor a child in one of our two Children’s Homes and become a member of our VCDF team by helping give on child a chance at a better future. Check out our SUPPORT page for more information.
